“Byron Katie's Work acts like a razor-sharp sword that cuts through the illusion and enables you to know for yourself the timeless essence of your being.”

— Eckhart Tolle

The Work is a method of inquiring into our stressful thoughts. It is a simple way to end our own suffering — a way to a peaceful mind. In the words of Byron Katie, “We suffer only because we are confused.” and “ An unquestioned mind is the world of suffering.”

The Work is just four questions:

Is it true?

Can you absolutely know that it's true?

How do you react when you think that thought?

Who would you be without that thought?

After you answer these questions, you are invited to turn the stressful thought around to the opposite. Find three genuine examples of how the turnaround is as true or truer in your life. You will find that your beliefs are Universal. In other words, we all have the same thoughts. The question is, are you willing to question your mind?

Some thoughts you might recognize as your own:

  • There is something wrong with me
  • I need more money
  • Something terrible is going to happen
  • I need your love
  • I am a failure
  • There is too much to do
  • I should be thinner, stronger, more beautiful
  • If I had more money I would be happier

To do The Work, you only need a pen, paper and an open mind.To discover your stressful thoughts, you can complete a Judge-Your-Neighbor Worksheet. To inquire into each thought, you can use a One-Belief-At-A-Time Worksheet. These worksheets and the Facilitation Guide (each in Adobe Acrobat format) can help you do The Work on your own at home.
